A collection of semi-autobiographical stories from one of the most famous Turkish-German writers. It is an accessible introduction to Özdamar’s work since it is not written in quite the same idiosyncratic style as her earlier work, such as ‘Mutterzunge’, which features many more intentional ‘errors’ and direct translations from Turkish. The style is, however, still very different to other writers and lends itself to close analysis. The story ‘Mein Berlin’ provides a particularly good account of Cold War Berlin from the Turkish-German perspective and would be interesting to study comparatively alongside other non-minority texts. The text ‘Fahrad auf dem Eis’ deals with cosmopolitanism and colonialism.
